Durham’s Miners’ Gala

Are you ready to create a unique memory you and your whole family will enjoy? Come and celebrate the 134th Miners Gala with The Town House in the heart of Durham on Saturday the 14th of July.

This traditional event sees marching bands proceed through the streets of Durham creating a electric street party atmosphere for the crowds of people who line the streets to watch them go by – making the occasion more of a fiesta than a march!

The details

At about 8:30am the procession sets off towards Durham Racecourse, from the main assembly point at the Market Place in the city centre.

The focal point of the Gala is the County Hotel at Old Elvet where the processions converge. Here, the union leaders, invited guests and local dignitaries greet the march from the hotel balcony and the bands pause to play their “party piece” before continuing the short distance to Durham Racecourse.

The Gala lasts approximately three to four hours, from the start of the march, due to the numbers of people who enjoy the day. Each year, the Gala atmosphere is exhilarating and at the Racecourse, you can enjoy street theatre, rides and marquees hosting various local companies and products, giving you a taste of the best Durham has to offer. You can be guaranteed a great day for all the family.
